I am a contractor operating through a limited company and am in the middle of applying for a mortgage and my mortgage broker has asked for my last 3 years SA302 forms, what is a SA302 form and how do I request it?

What is a SA302 form?

Your SA302 form is a summary of your income that has been reported to HMRC and mortgage providers often want this as proof of your earnings for a tax year if you are self-employed.

This will affect not just sole traders but also freelancers and contractors operating through a limited company.

As you are a contractor operating through a limited company your SA302 will show your personal earnings which will be your salary and dividends from your limited company as well as any other income you have.

How do I request my SA302 forms?

UPDATE OCT 2017 – HMRC NO LONGER ISSUE SA302 PAPER FORMS TO YOU – INSTEAD YOU NEED TO LOGIN TO YOUR HMRC ONLINE TAX ACCOUNT TO PRINT OUT YOUR TAX CALCULATION OR IF YOU HAVE AN ACCOUNTANT YOU ASK THEM FOR A COPY OF YOUR TAX CALCULATION WHICH MORTGAGE PROVIDERS SHOULD NOW ACCEPT.

The below advice is now out of date.

To get a copy of your SA302 the best option is to ring HMRC and ask them to send you copies for the tax years in question. If you work with an accountant you can ask them to do this on your behalf.

You can phone HMRC on the self assessment helpline.

Make sure you request all the tax years that you need – the last 3 tax years is a typical request – even if you have only been asked to provide 1 or 2 years SA302 it is good practice to request the last 3 years SA302 reports anyway so you have them on file.

Another thing to be aware of is that HMRC will post out the SA302 forms to the address they have for you on their records so make sure your address is correct and has been updated for house moves.

HMRC can also fax your SA302 and you could ask them to fax them directly to your mortgage broker if you wish.

If you have filed your tax return yourself through HMRC online you can actually also login to your online account and print out your tax calculation.

In order to request your SA302 forms you’ll need to give HMRC certain information including your name and address, date of birth, NI number and your Unique Tax Reference number (UTR) which is 10 digits long.

We would also suggest that when you speak to HMRC you mention that you are in the middle of a mortgage application and you would appreciate it if they can send out the SA302 forms as a priority, they will usually take around 10 days to come.

If you are in urgent need to get the information then you can ask them if they would fax the forms as well which they are usually happy to do.

We hope you have found this article about SA302 forms useful.
